The Springfield Pics skated in on Saturday night, knowing that they had a target on their back with their current streak, and skated out with a victory, defeating the Islanders Hockey Club 4 - 3 in a back and forth battle. Neither team scored in the first period, but the Pics struck first in the 2nd when Bryce St. Martin got the give and go pass from Felix Appelt, who was breaking down the wing and St. Martin was on the opposite side. St. Martin set up on the opposite post and shot from his knees and got Varveris blocking low while St. Martin went high over the leg blockers. Timofey Basarab was credited with the secondary assist. The Pics struck again later on in the 2nd when Seth Chernik went stick side against Varveris. Liam Byrne got possession of the puck and looked to take the initial shot. He then went behind the net for a wrap around but noticed traffic, and went a bit further down to find Chernik sitting in front of the net. Aiden Grabowski was credited with the secondary assist. The Islanders then scored three in a row to make it 3 - 2 going into the 3rd period. The Pics may have been down, but they were not out and Timofey Basarab showed it on the power play when he popped the water bottle as he got the pass from Dominick Balboni. Felix Appelt won the face off and dished if off to Balboni. Mike Dyer got his second goal of the season, and first game winning goal when he got the pass from beyond the red line from Liam Andersen and went down with Andersen, with Andersen acting as the decoy. Dyer was then able to get the puck to squeak through the legs of Varveris to make it 4 - 3. Spencer Strouse netted his first assist as a Pic as well, getting credit for the secondary assist. Garret Woodruff stopped 35 out of 38 shots in the win, while Mike Varveris stopped 40 out of 44 shots for the loss.
The Pics face the Boston Junior Bruins Sunday at 11:30 am at the New England Sports Center. |
