The Springfield Pics, proud members of the United States Premier Hockey League, are seeking qualified interns for the upcoming 2020-2021 season to serve in a variety of capacities. Our interns will have the opportunity to gain experience in many areas, including video production, broadcasting, photography, graphic design, and sports writing, while also obtaining college credit.
About The Pics:
The USPHL is one of the top junior hockey leagues in North America, regularly sending players to the NCAA and into pro hockey careers. Two of our former players, Bill Guerin (1985-1989) and Ron Hainsey (1996-97), were members of the 2017 Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins. The Pics currently field four teams in the USPHL: our Premier Division squad, the top-level team, the Elite Division squad, U16 and U15 teams. Our aim is to provide media coverage for each of the four teams throughout the season, which runs from early September through February, and hopefully into the postseason in March!
About The Internship:
Interns are needed in a variety of capacities as we seek to produce high-quality content across many platforms. We are primarily seeking college students who need internship credits and want to work in the many varied capacities of sports media. Because so many minor league teams in all sports are run as wear-all-the-hats organizations, interns can be assured that they will have a chance to participate in many aspects of the media side of the team, but also that they can concentrate on an area of interest. Additionally, all interns will have opportunities to travel with the team for selected away games.
Opportunities include sports writing (news pieces such as game recaps and player signing articles as well as feature pieces on our athletes and organization), video production (pregame and postgame show and features on our athletes), game broadcasting, graphic design (for website and social media), and game photography. Interns will get the opportunity to work as part of a team and also be able to post their work on the new springfieldjrpics.com.
What Is Needed To Apply?
Applicants should be available for at least 20 home dates between the four Pics teams between the months of September and February and be able to arrange for transportation to and from the Olympia Ice Center in West Springfield. Beyond that, a desire to work in hockey is all that is needed!
Those interested in an internship should submit a cover letter briefly detailing why this internship is desirable, one letter of reference (preferably from the applicant’s college advisor), and three samples of work, with two in the area of preference.
If you are interested in working with the Pics, but not a college student or not eligible for internship credits, apply anyway. Applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Please use the contact form below to start the process of becoming an intern with the Pics!
