It was a busy weekend for the Springfield Pics organization, with five games involving three of the four squads.
PREMIER—The Springfield Pics Premier team absorbed a tough loss and dealt one out in return, falling 9-1 to the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs before bouncing back to win a 7-5 thriller over the Hartford Jr. Wolf Pack.
The Pics struggled in their Friday night matchup at the Tri-Town Arena in Hooksett, New Hampshire; the Monarchs had a lead 2:45 in and scored four goals in each of the game’s first two periods, including a first-frame hat trick by Derek Neal. Luke James was able to bust the shutout with a power play goal at 1:09 of the third, which was assisted by Brian Scoville and Kirill Gusarov, but that was the extent of the scoring for Springfield; the Monarchs netted a PPG of their own at 4:50 to restore the eight goal edge as they outshot the Pics 46-32.
Sunday was a different tale. Captain Grant DeWitt opened the scoring at 7:39, only to have the Wolf Pack jump out to a 3-1 lead on three goals in 3:12, leading to a goalkeeping change as Sawyer Schmidt came on in relief. The move woke the Pics up, as they tied the game late in the period thanks to goals by Mike Skarbek and Mike Wilson.
The second period saw the Pics squander a two-man advantage and Hartford take a 4-3 lead shortly thereafter, and the edge seemed to be enough as the third dragged on, but Cam Kagan netted a tying power-play marker at 12:56 to set off another barrage off scoring; after a Wolf Pack goal at 13:55, Springfield potted a shorthanded goal to tie the game again as Jake Conrad played the hero at 14:27. Springfield took the lead shortly after, thanks to a Tomas Libovicky bomb at 16:58, and DeWitt sealed the deal at 19:37 for the 7-5 final.
ELITE—The Springfield Pics Elite team had a rough weekend, falling by identical 11-1 scores to the Islanders Hockey Club and the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs.
Against the IHC squad, Springfield spent much of the game in its own end, being outshot 64-15; the lone Springfield goal was scored by Yan Novotny at 16:25 of the second frame. The next day’s game at the Monarchs was equally tough, as the Pics were outshot 64-29 and the lone goal was tallied for Springfield by Branden Weeks from Connor Rock.
18U—The Springfield Pics 18U squad had the lone home contest of the weekend for the Pics, but came up just short in a 4-3 loss to CP Dynamo on December 2.
The teams traded first-period goals as Max Moriarty tied the game 1-1 at 12:43 for Springfield after an early Dynamo goal. The Pics then took a lead on the power play at 6:36 of the second as Alan Meyer tallied a goal, only for the Dynamo to flip the script with two goals in 46 seconds in the middle of the frame.
The visiting side doubled the lead with a power play tally at 6:16 of the third, but Mario Kellner responded at 8:58 to bring the score to 4-3; though the Pics pushed hard for the equalizer, outshooting the Dynamo 13-6 in the final frame, they could not find a fourth goal.
