MARLBOROUGH, Massachusetts—A two-point first period by Simon Berglind helped lead the Springfield Pics Premier squad to its first win of the season in USPHL play, as the team took a 3-1 decision over the P.A.L. Junior Islanders Premier at the New England Sports Complex on Saturday, September 23.
Playing two periods of twenty-five minutes each, the Pics got the jump on the Islanders fairly early on, with Berglind finishing a pass from captain Grant DeWitt at 9:38 for his first of the year.
Later in the frame, Tomas Libovicky and Berglind combined to get the puck to Michael Cecetka, who punched in a goal at 20:43 to put the Pics up 2-0; it was Cecetka’s second of the season.
The Pics took a late penalty, and the Islanders made them pay for it, with Andreas Aune burying a goal at 0:36 of the second frame to bring P.A.L.
That would be as close as the Islanders could get, however, with Luke James putting away his first of the year at 13:59 for the 3-1 final.
Springfield outshot the Islanders 28-19 in the contest; William Larson made 18 saves in the win to improve to 1-1-0 on the year.
The Pics next matchup is also at the New England Sports Center, with the Skipjacks Hockey Club facing off against Springfield at 10:10 AM on Sunday, September 24; the team will then play the Connecticut Junior Rangers at 4:30 PM that same day.
Congrats to former Pics coach Pat Tabb and the AIC Yellow Jackets on their upset win tonight!
