FOXBORO, Massachusetts—The Springfield Pics Premier squad opened the season with a 5-1 setback against the South Shore Kings Premier on Sunday, September 17.
Springfield falls to 0-1-0 on the season.
After an early Pics power play came up empty, Kevin Kaufman got the hosts on the board at 3:55. Not long after, the Kings power play had a chance and cashed in, as Kaufman set up Robbie Holyoke for a goal at 8:06 and gave South Shore a 2-0 edge.
The latter portion of the period went no better for the Pics; Nick Pennucci extended the Kings lead to 3-0 at 16:05 before Kaufman scored another at 18:22, putting Springfield down 4-0 after one.
The Pics did a better job of containing South Shore in the second period, halving the number of shots allowed, and got one back late in the frame when Alex Peresunko (Kharkov, Ukraine) lit the lamp for the first time this season with the Premier team on a pass from Tomas Libovicky (Kladno, Czech Republic) at 19:21.
However, the visiting squad did not find the net again; though they held the Kings off the board until a power play marker by Tommy Giandomenico with :33 left in regulation, the Pics struggled to generate chances, managing just three shots in each of the last two periods and 12 for the game overall.
Goalkeeper Blake Carlson (Clermont, Florida) stopped 29 shots in his first Pics start.
Springfield returns to action Tuesday, September 19 when they visit the Islanders Hockey Club at the Skate 3 Rink in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts for a 1:00 p.m. start.
