WEST SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts—The Springfield Pics Elite team mounted a late comeback effort, but fell short in a 5-4 loss to the Syracuse Stars at the Olympia Ice Center on Sunday, October 29, as the Stars finished a weekend sweep.
Springfield falls to 3-12-1 on the season.
Both teams had early chances, but it was the Stars who cashed in first, taking advantage of a power play with a goal by Sasha Golovko at 11:58. Four minutes later, another power play led to another goal, as Dalton Blundell snapped home a shot at 15:58 to bring the Stars to a 2-0 lead.
The Pics needed a response, and they got it on the next shift, as Gavin Rock and Brett Geoffroy set up Vinny Orlandi for a goal on the very next shift at 16:25.
Things seemed to be rolling in Springfield’s direction after a late penalty against the Stars when disaster struck; Syracuse won the draw and flew up the ice, and Bryce Grennan stuffed a shorthanded goal home at 18:20 to take a 3-1 lead.
In the second, the Stars added to the lead at 13:31 as Thomas Carrol scored, but the Pics replied immediately once again, as Luke Jodoin won the subsequent faceoff and pushed the puck to Sean Ferus; Ferus rushed into the zone and jammed a shot on goal that was stopped, but Jodoin was there to put back the rebound at 13:53 to bring the Pics back within two.
The Pics battled into the third and cut the deficit to one as Ferus scored at 12:24 off of a steal and pass from Branden Weeks, getting within a 4-3 margin. The teams then traded goals, as John Moffat finished off a rush at 16:41 only to have Mario Metallo and Rock set up Luke Jodoin for a power play goal at 17:20 to make it 5-4.
That set up a furtive finish in which the Pics pulled their goalkeeper for a sixth attacker and drew a penalty, taking shot after shot on the six-on-four but to no avail; Anthony Mazzoni held the door shut when it mattered, helping the Stars hold on to the victory.
Springfield ended with a 38-37 shots advantage; Nick Schulte took the loss, stopping 32 shots.
The Pics return to action Saturday, November 4 when they play host to the Junior Bruins at 6:40 p.m.
