Kavanagh to Tufts University

The Springfield Pics are proud to announce that Sean Kavanagh has committed to Tufts University for the fall. A native of Wilbraham, MA the 1993 born defenseman appeared in 44 EJ games posting 5 goals, 19 assists for 24 points.

Tufts University is a member of NCAA Division III NESCAC Conference.

"I am very grateful for the opportunity to attend Tufts University next fall. As a student-athlete, it has always been a goal of mine to attend a school that has both strong academics and a strong hockey program, and I believe that Tufts University exceeds those expectations. I would like to thank the Springfield Pics organization for helping me achieve my goals. In particular, I would like to thank Coach Tabb for his guidance on the ice, and more importantly, off the ice. I would also like to thank Coach Daniels and Coach Smith for their comprehensive defensive coaching that is second to none. Lastly, I would like to thank my entire family and friends; I would not have been able to accomplish this goal without their help and support" said Kavanagh

Browne to St. Michael's College

The Springfield Pics are proud to announce that Greg Browne has committed to St. Michael's College for the fall. A native of Cohasset, MA the 1993 born Defensemen played in 42 EJHL games this season.

Saint Michael's college is a member of NCAA Division II NE-10, while also competing in the highly competitive ECAC East conference.

"I'm extremely excited to be headed to St. Michaels College next year. I want to thank my family and the coaching staff at Springfield for all of the help and support. I look forward to contributing to a St Mikes hockey programs that's on the rise." Said Browne

"We would like to congratulate Greg and his family on this accomplishment. He came to us at the beginning of the season looking for an opportunity; he took that opportunity and never looked back. Greg added stability and experience to our blue line, a physical, shut down defenseman. Platt to Manhattanville College

The Springfield Pics are proud to announce that Adam Platt has committed to Manhattanville College for the fall. A native of Trumbull, CT the 1992 born center posted 24 points in 44 EJHL games.

Manhanttanville College is a member of NCAA Division III ECAC West Conference. Platt will join former Pics Matt Coleman, Mark Rivera, Kevin Struempfler, and Nick Giuffrida on a Valiants club that recently played in the ECAC West championship game.

"I am very excited for the opportunity to play for Manhattanville College in the fall. Manhattanville has the combination of academics and hockey that I have been looking for in a college and I feel it will be a perfect fit for me. The Manhattanville program has a proud history of success and is always a top team in the nation, and I am honored to become a part of that. I know that my time in Springfield has prepared me to take this next step into college hockey. I would like to thank my teammates over the past few years for always pushing me to become a better player. I would also like to thank Coach Smith, Coach Daniels, and Coach Tabb for helping me these past two seasons in Springfield. They gave me the support and advice that helped develop me both on and off the ice. And lastly I would like to thank my family who has been behind me ever since I started played and have encouraged me to always strive for my goals." Said Platt

Adam came to us after winning a prep championship at Salisbury and took the necessary steps off the ice to add size and strength during his two seasons with us. Orszulak to American International College

The Springfield Pics are proud to announce that Asst Captain Austin Orszulak has committed to American International College for the fall. Orszulak a 92' birth year forward from Springfield, MA was an EJHL All Star this season while posting 21 goals 30 assists 51 points in 45 league games.

American International College is a member of NCAA Division One Atlantic Hockey League.

"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play Division I hockey for AIC next season. It has been a lifelong dream of mine to play amongst the best collegiate hockey players in the nation. I would not have this opportunity without the support I've received throughout my whole life from my family, especially my father. His dedication to my preparation to play in the Division I level has truly been the foundation to my success. I can't thank him enough. My coaches through the years also have been a huge factor as to where I am today. Their commitment, perseverance, and passion for the game of hockey are just a few key factors that motivated me to arrive at where I am today. The Springfield Jr. Pics Organization has been one of the best decisions I've made in my hockey career. Coach Tabb along with Coach Daniels and Coach Smith for their support, work ethic, and professional knowledge of the game has taught me more the past two years than I ever would have anticipated. I couldn't be more grateful for them to have the confidence in me to be a part of such a wonderful organization. Lastly, I'd like to thank each teammate I've had through the years where I've been a rookie to a Captain. I'll never forget any of the guys I have played with, and will bring everything I've gained through the years with me to AIC." Said Orszulak

Lundin Selected Goaltender of the Year

The award for Goaltender of the Year went to Linus Lundin of the Springfield Jr. Pics. A native of Sweden, Lundin played every minute of every game for the Jr. Pics this season and posted a record of 24-20-2-1 to go with a 2.51 goals against average and a save percentage of .949. He led the Pics to an appearance in the EJHL playoffs where they were eliminated by the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs. Read about more EJHL awards here.

 

 


Schools to Alabama Huntsville

The Springfield Pics are proud to announce that Captain Wade Schools has committed to Alabama Huntsville for next fall. The 1992 born native of Enfield, CT was an EJ all star this season, he posted 13 points while appearing in 44 league games. The 6' 3'' 215 pound shutdown defenseman will join a chargers program as they embark on their first season as members of the WCHA.

"I am very excited to have the opportunity to play in the WCHA for the UAH Chargers. It has always been a dream of mine to play division 1 hockey. I look forward to starting my future with the Chargers and I am looking forward to my new challenges. I would like to thank Coach Tabb and Coach Daniels and Coach Smith for all their time and effort in developing me as a player and person. I would also like to thank my family for all their support over the years. I would like to thank my team mates for pushing me in practice making me a better player." said Wade Schools

"We would like to congratulate Wade and his family on this accomplishment. He worked his way through our program from Midgets to Empire to captaining our EJ squad and earning a NCAA division one athletic scholarship. The loyalty that Wade and his family showed throughout the development process was a major factor in this accomplishment. They stuck to a plan both on and off the ice as Wade grew as a person and player. His work ethic combined with his physical presence, skill set, and a great team guy Wade will have an impact at the next level. USPHL Tryout Press Release
W. Springfield 3.18.2013)

The United States Premier Hockey League Membership ("USPHL") is pleased to announce that tryouts for the league's inaugural season will begin in April. The USPHL will host three levels of hockey – 16U and 18U Midget Level and 20U registered under USA Hockey's Senior League Registration Process in which players of birth years 1993, 1994 and 1995 are eligible. The USPHL organizations intend to maintain teams in their existing junior leagues including the Eastern Junior Hockey League and Empire Junior Hockey League where applicable. The USPHL will commence competition in September of 2013.

The USPHL members have each developed a complete player development model where at present over 2,000 boys and girls train, compete and enjoy the sport of ice hockey. These programs go beyond the on ice experience to include education, leadership and community service components to help foster a complete student athlete. The member organizations believe the USPHL will provide the next step in high performance training and competition and will provide unmatched exposure to NCAA hockey programs for young aspiring hockey players. Springfield Pics Jr. Program and Springfield Rifles Hockey Organization Announce Formal Alliance

The Springfield Pics junior hockey program and the Springfield Rifles hockey organization announce a formal alliance for the 2013-2014 season. All teams will play out of the Olympia Ice Center in West Springfield, MA.

The Springfield Pics were recently accepted into the newly formed United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL) at the U16 and U18 levels. These 2 full season teams will compete as the Springfield Rifles.

EJ Pics Fall in Two
West Springfield (2.28.2012)

The Springfield Pics EJ team came into the playoffs this week as a number 4 seed and drew the number 5 seed New Hampshire Junior Monarchs of the Northern Division for the play-in round at the Olympia Ice Center in West Springfield.

The Pics played penalty-free for most of the 1st period on Tuesday but the Monarchs rattled the net first to make it 1-0. A strong defensive 2nd period resulted in neither team adding to the scoresheet but at 1:16 of the 3rd period the Monarchs scored for the 2-0 lead and eventual game winner. Pics goalie Lunus Lundin saved 25 of 27 shots he faced.

Facing an elimination game, the Pics battled the Monarchs again on Wednesday. The Monarchs made it 1-0 at 16:02 of the 1st period and added another in the 2nd to make it 2-0. Brian Brown opened the 3rd period with a goal to get the Pics within one goal. Greg Browne assisted on the goal. The Monarchs returned with a goal of their own 0:12 seconds later to make it 3-1. At the end of the 3rd period the Pics pulled their goalie for an extra skater with sights set on closing the scoring gap. The Monarchs found the empty net at 19:25 of the 3rd to end one of the most promising seasons the Pics have had in a few years.


'Pics Thriving Again

The purpose always has been and always will be the same.

Since the team's inception during the 1970s, the Springfield 'Pics junior hockey team has prepared players for college. The team, which begin as the Springfield Olympics, is still housed at the Olympia in West Springfield.

The program can trace its roots back to the late former Springfield Kings player, Gary Dineen. He saw kids playing hockey in backyard rinks in the Hungry Hill section of Springfield and it reminded him of his home in Canada.

Kokosa to Bowdoin

The Springfield Pics are proud to announce that forward Zak Kokosa has committed to Bowdoin College for next fall. In 42 league games he has posted 27 points with 12 goals and 15 assists.  Kokosa is a 1992 birth year who resides in Aurora, IL.

Zak will join a Bowdoin program currently ranked the #3 Division three program in the country with a current record of 17-2-1.

"I am very excited at the opportunity to attend Bowdoin College next fall. Since I started playing in the EJHL, it's always been my goal to attend a college that has both strong academics and hockey program, and I am extremely confident that I have found that in Bowdoin. Playing for the Springfield Pics this year has been an incredible experience for me. I'm ready to finish, not only this year, but my junior career off on a high note and bring everything that I have got and have learned to Bowdoin the next four years. I firmly believe that I would not be announcing this today if it weren't for the Springfield Pics organization and their coaches. I cannot thank Coaches Tabb, Daniels, and Smith enough for developing me both, on and off the ice, pushing me everyday, promoting me to colleges. Furthermore, I would also like to thank my family; none of this would have been attainable without their help and support." Stated Kokosa

Lundin EJHL Collects Third Defensive Player
of the Week Award

Linus Lundin continued his stellar play in net for the Pics in their two games last weekend. He turned away 35 shots in the Pics' 3-2 win over the high-powered Junior Bruins on Saturday. On Sunday, he made 52 saves in a 3-1 loss to the Connecticut Oilers. Linus, a native of Stockholm, Sweden, currently boasts a 2.83 goals against average and a .920 save percentage along with over 1100 saves this season.


EJHL All Star Monday

The Eastern Junior Hockey League held its 20th Annual All Star Game on Monday, January 21, 2013, at Merrimack College's J. Thom Lawler Arena and featured some of the best players from the EJHL's fourteen teams. The following Springfield Pics players were selected to appear in the All-Star Game:

Austin Orszulak, Linus Lundin, Wade Schools and Dan Mele

With four representatives in this years All Star game it marks the most in the Pics program history. Congratulations!

 


Mele Lifts EJ Pics in OT
W. Springfield (01.14.2012)

The Springfield Pics Dan Mele was able to lift the EJ team to victory in dramatic fashion over the New York Applecore team on Sunday. The Applecore team held a 1-0 lead until 15:49 into the second period when Dan Mele assisted by Austin Orszulak and Brian Brown, put one in the back of the net for the 1-1 tie. At the end of regulation the Pics threw a power-house offensive line-up out onto the ice for the 5-minute overtime. But it was the scrappy play at 2:08 into the OT on the boards by Mele that broke him out alone into the Applecore zone for a 1 vs. 3. Mele skated past the defenders onto the goalie alone. Some crafty stick handling and he put it over the shoulder of the NY goalie for the overtime win. The EJ Pics are currently in 4th place - 3 pts. behind the Bay State Breakers. Team leaders are Dan Mele with 42 pts. and Austin Orszulak with 41 pts.


Ermakov Commits to Cadets

The Springfield Pics are proud to announce that forward Dmitry Ermakov has committed to Norwich University for next fall. In 24 league games he has posted 20 points with 6 goals and 14 assists. Ermakov is a 1992 birth year who resides in Columbia, Maryland.

Dmitry will join a Norwich program currently ranked as the #1 DIII program in the country with a current record of 10-0-0.

"I'm very excited to continue my hockey career as a cadet at one of the most prestigious hockey programs in the country with such a sound history. I would like to thank all my family members for believing in me and sacrificing so much through out my entire hockey career." Commented Ermakov

Mele Commits to Hockey East Huskies

The Springfield Pics are proud to announce that forward Daniel Mele has committed to the University of Connecticut for next fall. The 1993 born Pics' assistant captain is a native of Buffalo, NY. In 23 league games Mele has posted 16 goals 14 assists for 30 points.

"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue my hockey career at UConn. It has always been my goal to play Division 1 college hockey for a respected program such as UConn and I am very excited for my future there. Along with that, the change from Atlantic Hockey to Hockey East makes this an exciting time for the program and I can't wait to be a part of the team's progression." Commented Mele

Lundin EJHL Repeats as Defensive Player of the Week

Linus Lundin continued the strong play this week, leading the Pics to three wins in 5 days. He sits near the top of the league in all statistical categories and leads in minutes played. Last week, he turned in performances of 39, 38, and 35 saves in each of the Pics’ three wins. The 1992-born Stockholm native is in his second season with the Pics.


Coach Rettew Passes
West Springfield (7.16.2012)

It is with great sadness that the Springfield Pics Hockey Association announces the loss of Coach George Rettew who passed away on July 14, 2012.

Coach Rettew began coaching the Bantam Major Program, for the Springfield Junior Pics when the hockey program was formed. Coach Rettew was responsible for giving many of our hockey players the opportunity to go on to play hockey at a Preparatory School. Coach George Rettew will be greatly missed in our hockey community and our hockey associates in Canada.

His funeral will be held on Thursday at the Firtion-Adams Funeral Service, 76 Broad St., Westfield at 9 AM, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial in Holy Trinity Church 335 Elm St, Westfield at 10 AM. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday at the funeral home from 5PM until 8 PM.


In Memoriam: Kevin Major
West Springfield (7.13.2011)

The Springfield Pics organization is mourning the passing of one of their own - EMPIRE league player, Kevin Major. Major, 19, of Westfield, MA, a recent St. Mary's High School hockey standout and Holyoke Community College student passed away on Monday, July 11, 2011.

Teammates are saddened by the recent tragedy to one of their own and have posted many tributes regarding him as "...one of the happiest and funniest guys I ever met and one of the best teammates I ever had...".
