Pics' Alum Duda Signs Professional Contract

SAINT JOHN – The Saint John Sea Dogs would like to announce the signing of free agent defenceman Steven Duda to a standard junior contract.
The 6'4", 195-pound Duda spent the 2011-12 season playing with the Springfield Pics of the Eastern Junior Hockey League in the United States. Duda recorded his first professional point on 10/6 assist vs. Halifax
"Steven is a big kid with a very good skill set. This being his first year of major junior hockey, he will have an opportunity to play and develop," says Sea Dogs Head Coach and General Manager Mike Kelly. "We believe that in time he will be an impact player in the league."
In 38 games with the Pics, the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native registered two goals, both of them game-winners, along with eight assists. His 76 penalty minutes tied for second place on the team.
Springfield Pics Announce College Commitments

The Springfield Pics are pleased to announce the following players have made their college commitments.
Matt Coleman a 1991 born forward and native of Brentwood, NJ has committed to Manhattanville College, members of the highly competitive ECAC West. Matt amassed 64 points in 44 EJHL league games on 18 goals, 46 assists. "Matt posses game changing speed, he competes in all areas of the ice. He will be an impact player at the college level" states GM/Head Coach Patrick Tabb.
Joining Coleman at Manhattanville this fall will be 1991 born defenseman Nick Giuffrida, a native of Shoreham, NY. In 32 EJHL contests Nick posted 22 points on 9 goals, 13 assists from the blue line. "Nicky arrived to our team ten games into the season; he was an instant impact player for us. He posses a great skill set, along with Coleman will also be an impact freshman for the Valiants, with the ability to quarterback the power play" added Coach Tabb.
Southington, CT native Chris Lembo a 1991 birth year forward and graduate of Loomis Chaffee School has committed to ECAC Northeast member Western New England University. Lembo played in all 45 regular season games and playoffs, totaling 6 goals, 12 assists for 18 points. "Chris has an outstanding skill set; he joins WNEU at a very exciting time for the upstart program after their most successful season in over ten years. On and off the ice Chris is a fully committed student athlete with goal scoring ability." Stated Coach Tabb.
Mike Cherpak came to the Pics via Winchendon Prep, calling Enfield, CT home the 1992 born forward has committed to ECAC Northeast member Suffolk University for the fall. Appearing in 37 EJHL games he totaled 8 points, on 4 goals and 4 assists. "Mike is a power forward, with a quick release, heavy shot. His upside is tremendous as he continues to improve; he has some great hockey ahead of him at Suffolk" Coach Tabb.
Coleman, Guiffrida, Lembo, and Cherpak join 2011-12 teammates Tyler Bouchard (UCONN), Willie Smith (Umass-Amherst), and Matt Tetro (Hamilton) on the college placement list.

Pics EJHL Alum Rivera Named ECAC West Rookie of the Year

Manhattanville men's hockey team was rewarded for another successful ECAC West Conference season by the conference's head coaches this week, as freshman Mark Rivera (Belmar, N.J./Springfield Pics (EJHL)) was named the ECAC West Co-Rookie of the Year.

EJHL All-Star Rosters Announced
The Eastern Junior Hockey League 2012 EJHL All-Star Game, took place on Monday, January 16, at the Tri-Town Ice Arena in Hooksett, NH. Forward Tyler Bouchard represented the Springfield Pics on the South's roster in the All-Star game. Matt Antonacci and Chris Sattler represented the Pics in the EMPIRE League All-Star game also held today in NH. In the EMPIRE Futures Game the Pics sent Bryce Peritz, Billy Carrabino, Willy Smith, Andy Provost and Logan Schinabeck.

Three EJ Pics Top Scoring Leaders
The Eastern Junior Hockey Leagues top scoring leaders include our very own Pics in the 7th, 8th and 9th slots. Tyler Bouchard, Joe Giordano and Matt Coleman represent the Pics with an impressive combination of 52 goals and 87 assists. Giordano helped his cause with an impressive showing this past weekend scoring 4 goals and 1 assist on Sunday against visiting Philadelphia Revolution.
EJ and Empire Pics Head to Winter Showcase
The showcase is hosted by the Eastern Junior Hockey League, the premiere junior hockey league in the Eastern United States. The event includes all fourteen of our teams, as well as teams from the EJHL South, Empire Junior Hockey League, AJHL, Met League, and Prep and U18 teams. The tournament will feature a number of Canadian junior and CEGEP teams. The event will be held from January 6-8 at the New England Sports Center, in Marlborough, MA.
Bouchard Commits to UConn
The Springfield Pics are proud to announce that forward Tyler Bouchard has committed to the University of Connecticut for next fall. Bouchard, the Pics current Captain, is a native of Glastonbury, CT and a 1992 birth year. He currently leads the team in scoring with 17 goals, 14 assists, 31 points in just 21 league games. Tyler was named to the 2011 EJHL All Star team and was also a member of the EJHL pre-season select team that played in Russia this past August.
“It is an honor to be joining the UConn ice hockey team, and the Uconn athletic Family. Being a Connecticut native it is a dream come true to become a husky. I would like to thank the Pics coaching staff, Coach Tabb, Coach Daniels and Coach Smith for all of their help and support throughout my years in Springfield, and also would like to thank my family for all of their love and support.” Commented Bouchard
Tyler is the second Division One committed player and third college commitment of the young season for the Pics. He is currently three goals from hitting the 60 goal total in his EJ tenure while also amassing 117 points.
“We would like to congratulate Tyler and his family on this accomplishment. It was never a question of if but when Bouch would find his DI home. He posses a high skill set, a gifted goal scorer, with a great quick release. Tyler has shown the commitment on and off the ice, he came here two seasons ago with a goal and we are happy to see him accomplish that.” Stated GM/Coach Patrick Tabb.
Moorhouse EMPIRE Player of the Week
Evan Moorhouse came into the Bay State game 5 minutes into action after the Breakers came out flying scoring 2 quick goals but Moorhouse came in and shut the door stopping all 34 shots he faced. He kept the Breakers off the score board and allow the Pics offense to chip away and eventually to a 6-2 victory in an always tough place to play Rockland.
Smith Accepts Full Scholarship at UMass
The Springfield Pics are proud to announce that EJHL and Empire forward Willy Smith has accepted a full scholarship from Hockey East member Umass-Amherst. The East Longmeadow, MA native is a 1996 birth year. He will arrive at the Amherst, MA campus fall of 2014.
Smith skated in 26 Empire games last season as a 14 year old posting 30 points on 13 goals and 17 assists. This season before his call up to the EJ, Willie had 14 points in 9 Empire games and currently has played in 5 EJHL league games posting his first point on October 15th.
The son of long time Pics coach Vern Smith, a former professional player, drafted by the New York Islanders in the second round #42 overall in the 1982 NHL entry draft.
Umass Amherst alum and former Captain Rob Bonneau, Head Coach of the Pics Empire, team still remains the all time DI leading scorer in school history added: “We are extremely proud of what Willy has accomplished and look forward to see him grow as a young man and a hockey player. I hope Willy enjoys his experience at Umass as they will stay with him the rest of his life. He is such a hard working player who loves to play hockey and Umass will proud to have him part of there program.”

Moorhouse EMPIRE Player of the Week
Evan Moorhouse had his best game of the season as he stopped 38 Boston Bandits shots while allowing only one goal. He was most impressive in the 3rd period stopping a 17 Bandits shots and preserving the one goal lead. It was a performance the team needed to get out of their 3 game slump.
Bouchard EJHL Offensive Player of the Week
Tyler Bouchard had an outstanding weekend, collecting eight points in the Pics’ two wins over Philadelphia. On Saturday 10/15/11, he recorded a hat trick and added an assist. He kept up the pace on Sunday with two goals and two assists. The Glastonbury, CT, native currently sits sixth in the EJHL with 19 points and second in goals with 11.
Sattler EMPIRE Player of the Week
Chris Sattler continued his strong play with 4 goals and 3 assist in 3 games this past weekend. In game 1 against Maksymum, Sattler got the Pics started with the first goal of the game and added a power play goal in the second period. In game 2 against Salem Ice Dogs, Sattler was in on all the scoring. He had a PP goal and 2 assists. In game 3 against the Boston Bandits, Sattler again was in on all scoring with a goal and PP assist.
Pics EJ Forward Top 10 in Scoring
The Springfield Pics EJ team has consistently held a skater in the top 10 scoring leaders for the past several years. This years standout is Dan Mele (Buffalo, NY), In the first 5 games Mele has 4 goals, 3 assists, 7 points; 2 of his goals were on the powerplay and 1 was a short-handed goal.
Tetro Commits to Hamilton College
The Springfield Pics are proud to announce that forward Matt Tetro has committed to Hamilton College for next fall. A native of Williamsville, NY the 1992 born winger is a graduate of the Taft School.
“I am really excited about becoming a part of the Hamilton program. The new coaching staff, Coach Rob Haberbusch and Coach Ken Scuderi, have done great things with the program in a short amount of time, and I am thrilled to be playing for them next season. I want to thank my coaches of the Springfield Pics for all that they have done for me so early in my time as Pic, both on and off the ice. Coach Tabb, Coach Daniels, and Coach Vern have been amazing, and I look forward to learning more from them throughout the season before continuing on to Hamilton next year. I also want to thank my family for all of the support they have given me in pursuing my goals.” States Tetro
Hamilton College competes in the highly competitive NESCAC conference.

EJ Pics Goalie Defensive Player of the Week
Linus Lundin had an outstanding series against the South Shore Kings, stopping 86 of 90 shots in two games. He started off the series with a 44-save outing, leading to a 5-1 win. In the second game, he turned away 38 of the Kings’ 42 attempts. The Stockholm, Sweden, native currently sits fourth in the EJHL with a .931 save percentage.
EJ Pics Compete in Bruins Showcase with Pair of Wins
Marlboro, MA (9.25.2011)
The EJHL Springfield Pics started out the season with high hopes and a team destined for greatness built around speed. Sometimes greatness comes with time but this team has quickly matured over the last four games with an epic win over Green Mountain Glades and a stacked New Hampshire Monarchs team to bring their record to an even 2-2. On Saturday, the Pics behind goalie Linus Lundin (31 saves) played to a tie at the end of regulation time. Matthew Coleman scored in the first period as each team skated to a tie at the end of each period. Tyler Gjurich with assists from Giordano and Bouchard, tied the game to send it to OT. Newcomer Jeff Alderfer scored at the 0:49 mark in OT for the win.
The Pics ended the weekend with Corbin McGuire (1 goal/1 assist) putting it past Monarch goalie Flachsbinder at 11:48 in the 1st period. Matthew Coleman took advantage of a Monarchs hooking penalty with an assist from Giordano and McGuire. Tyler Gjurich, Austin Orszulak, and Tyler Bouchard rounded out the scoring as the Pics scored four goals in the second period. Despite a penalty filled second period the Pics held the Monarchs power play to 0-7. Pics goalie Linus Lundin saw a total of 32 shots to shut out the Monarchs.
