2010 - 2011 Season

Bouchard Headed to Russia
Boston, MA (8.9.2011)

EJHL Springfield Pics forward Tyler Bouchard has been named to the EJHL Select Team that will participate in the 2011 Junior World Cup in Omsk, Russia. The Eastern Junior Hockey League will be sending a Select Team to compete in the Junior World Cup in Omsk, Russia from August 28 until September 4. The tournament field also includes Red Army (Russia), Dinamo Riga (Latvia), Tatra Wolves (Slovakia), Karlovy Vary (Czech Republic), Malmo (Sweden), Fort McMurray Oil Barons (Canada), and Dinamo-Shinnik (Belarus).

The team selection process began with an invite to a weekend combine tryout camp held in Haverhill, MA.

The EJHL Selects will be arriving in Russia on August 26 and will begin play on August 30 against Riga. They will then face off against Tatra on August 31. The Red Army awaits the Selects on September 2. Should they finish as one of the top two teams, the Selects will play in the final set for September 3.

EMPIRE Pics Named Conference All Stars
Springfield, MA (7.27.2011)
Lukas Samuelsson, of Stockholm, Sweden was named to the Eastern Conference All-Conference Team as a First Team selection as a defenseman. Samuelsson will attend Johnson and Wales University in the Fall of 2011. Garrett Torrico, of Mt. Washington, MA was also given the honor and named as a Second Team Forward.



Lockwood Heading Home for Fall 2011

The Springfield Pics are proud to announce that goaltender and assistant captain Courtney Lockwood has committed to Colorado College for this fall. This is a homecoming for the 6’1” 190lb native of Breckenridge, CO

“I am very excited to have the opportunity to play at such a storied program like Colorado College. It has been my life-long goal to come and be part of the Colorado College hockey program and continue my education at an outstanding school. It is surreal to be able to return Colorado and play Division 1 Hockey as well as pursue my academic interests while being so close to home. I am very excited to be part of the Tiger’s program and grow as a person and an athlete over the next four years. I would like to thank my family, especially my brother, for supporting me over the years in my pursuit of playing Division 1 College hockey. Finally I would like to thank my teammates for their support as well as Coach Tabb and Coach Daniels for giving me the opportunity to play and excel in Springfield.” Commented Lockwood

Lockwood is a two year member of the Pics an EJHL All-Star in 2009-10 and finalist for goalie of the year. He followed his rookie campaign with another outstanding season in net leading the Pics to their best season since 05’. Courtney was second in the league in minutes played with 1,955 his strong play continued down the stretch and into the playoffs where in 5 games he posted a 1.57 GAA and a .939 save %.

Lockwood is the seventh Division One commitment for the 2010-11 Springfield Pics.

Lockwood came to us October of last season and has been a work horse and the backbone of our club ever since. Springfield Pics’ Alum Signs with ECHL’s Reading Royals: Royals Sign Defenseman Mike Little
Reading, PA (3.23.2011)

The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that the team has signed defenseman Mike Little to an Amateur Tryout Agreement.

Little (5’10/192) (23), who hails from Enfield, Connecticut, recently completed his senior season at American International College, where he registered thirteen points (1g-12a) and fourteen penalty minutes in twenty-nine games. In 133 total games over four seasons with the Yellow Jackets, Little scored five goals, assisted on twenty-seven others (thirty-two points) and picked up thirty-two penalty minutes.

Springfield Pics Alumni Jesper Strale Named to ECAC West All-Rookie Team and Named Most Outstanding Player of the ECAC West Tournament
Elmira, NY (3.16.2011)

First year Men’s Ice Hockey standout Jesper Strale ’14 (Uppsala, Sweden -- Springfield Pic's EJHL) was named to the ECAC West All-Rookie team. Strale ranked second in the ECAC West in rookie scoring with .91 points per game in conference games alone and came on strong for the Soaring Eagles late in the season tallying points in Elmira’s last 7 contests.

Strale helped lead Elmira to the championship with two goals and an assist in the ECAC West championship game. Gaining the tournaments Most Outstanding Player award as a freshman.

In 2009-10 Jesper lead the Springfield Pics in goals with 27 and second in points with 45 in 45 league games.


Struempfler to Clarkson University
W. Springfield (3.14.2011)

The Springfield Pics are proud to announce that defensemen Kevin Struempfler has committed to Clarkson University for this fall. The 6’ 190lb native of Lincoln Univ, PA finished seventh among EJ defensemen in scoring with 6 goals 23 assists 29 points appearing in all 45 league games.

“I am very excited and am looking forward to playing for the Clarkson Golden Knights. I would like to thank Coach Tabb, Coach Daniels, and Coach Smith for their guidance and support through it all. I also wanted to thank Jared Beach of Endeavor Sports Performance for his help and guidance throughout the college recruiting process.” States Struempfler.

“Last but not least I want to thank my family for their support and for giving me the opportunity to play junior ice hockey, which helped me to reach my goal of playing Division I college ice hockey." Added Struempfluer

Struempfler is the sixth Division One committed player on the 2010-11 Springfield Pics and the second defensemen on the club attending Clarkson this fall joining teammate JD Carrabino.

“We are so happy for Kevin and his family on this accomplishment. He showed up to training camp prepared and never looked back, he came to our program with a goal of playing Division One college hockey and that is what he accomplished. Kevin is a very reliable defensemen who takes pride in his work everyday, never gets beat one on one, posses a great first pass and was a big part of our defensive group this season.” Commented GM/Coach Patrick Tabb


Pic Alumni Named ECAC Northeast Rookie of the Year
Springfield, MA (3.1.2011)

Western New England College freshman Chris Connors (Albany, NY) was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast Men's Hockey Rookie-of-the-Year Friday (Feb. 25). He also was named to the league's All-Rookie Team.

Connors, a forward, led the Golden Bears in scoring during the regular season with 30 points (9 goals, 21 assists). He also netted a team best 15 points (3-12) in league competition.

A Sport Management major, Connors ranks fifth among NCAA Division III players in points per game for a rookie (1.20).

With Connors helping to lead the way, Western New England placed sixth among eight schools in the ECAC Northeast with a 5-9 record to qualify for the ECAC Northeast Tournament for the first time since 2000. The Golden Bears were one of the most improved teams in the nation with an 8-16-1 mark after winning only three games last winter.


Barthlemess Commits to Sacred Heart

The Springfield Pics are proud to announce that assistant captain Chad Barthelmess has committed to Sacred Heart University for this fall. Chad is currently second on the Pics in scoring with 21 goals 21 assists 42 points in 35 EJHL contests. The 6’ 190lb winger is a native of Norristown, PA.

“I am very excited and am looking forward to playing for the Sacred Heart Pioneers. I would like to thank Coach Tabb, Coach Daniels, and Coach Smith for their guidance and support through it all. I also want to thank my family for supporting me since the beginning and giving me the opportunity to play for the Pics which enabled me to receive a college scholarship,” commented Barthelmess.

“We are very happy for Chad and his family on this accomplishment; he has worked extremely hard on and off the ice the past two years to get to this point. Chad is a player that has been with us from the start when we took over the program last season, he has evolved into a leader, and one of a handful of guys that helped us set the foundation for our program. He competes every shift, and every practice, making the players around him better. Chad is a powerful skater with a heavy shot that will make him an impact player at the college level,” states GM/Coach Patrick Tabb.

Barthelmess is the fifth Division One-committed player on the 2010-11 Pics.


Rivera Offensive Player of the Week

Mark Rivera had a huge weekend, potting two goals and four assists in the Pics’ two wins over the Green Mountain Glades. He notched a goal and three assists on Saturday and had a goal and an assist on Sunday. In his eight games with Springfield, Mark boasts an 8-8-16 scoring line and sits fourth on the team with 37 points. The Wall, NJ, native is receiving considerable NCAA interest. Struempfler Defensive Player of the Week
Eastern Junior Hockey League (2.11.2011)
Kevin Struempfler, a native of Lincoln Univ., PA, had a 5 point weekend from the Pics blueline. In Springfield's weekend victories, Kevin had two goals and three assists while also contributing his always-steady defensive efforts. In 37 league games, he has 24 points on 5 goals and 19 assists, good for sixth overall in defensemen scoring.

1/24/2011 :
Newly acquired Mark Rivera of the EJHL Pics continues to impress as he nets 2 goals in 7-1 win over Apple Core. Forward Joe Budnick leads all scorers with 47 points and is 6th in league points.

The Empire Pics look to rebound after "last second" defeats in the Northwood Invitational at Lake Placid, NY. After defeating powerhouse Bridgeton Academy 2-1 the Empire team gave up a game winning goal with :18 seconds left in the game against Nichols School. With a tie-breaker at stake the Pics needed a shutout against Rothesay Netherwood to go into the semi-finals on Sunday. Going into the last minute of play with a 1-0 lead the Pics were not able to hold the lead. With :30 seconds remaining the opponent scored and that was enough to put the Pics out of the race. Tied at 1-1 the Pics goalie was pulled for an extra skater but an empty net goal sealed the Pics fate.

Tyler DeMarco (2) and William Inman of the CHA team scored goals in the Pics overtime win against the fourth place New Hampshire Monarchs. 2:31 into overtime play Mike Carlson netted the winner on assists from Matt Maziarz and Robbie Smith.


Carrabino Commits to Clarkson

The Springfield Pics are proud to announce that JD Carrabino has committed to Clarkson University for next fall. A native of New Cannan, CT the 6’ 6” 230 lb. defensemen is a 1991 birth year. Currently second for defense in league scoring with a 3-19-22 line in 22 EJ games.

“I am extremely proud and look forward to joining the Golden Knights program; I want to thank Coach Tabb, Coach Daniels and my family for giving me the opportunity and guidance to earn a college scholarship.” Stated Carrabino.

Carrabino was recently ranked #203 by NHL Central Scouting on their mid term rankings for North American skaters for the upcoming 2011 Draft.

EJHL All Star Rosters Announced

The Eastern Junior Hockey League has announced the rosters for the 2011 EJHL All-Star Game, which will take place on Monday, January 17, at 12:30 PM at the Tri-Town Ice Arena in Hooksett, NH. Congratulations to Springfield Pics forwards Joe Budnick and Tyler Bouchard for their all-star selection.

NHL Central scouting released their mid-term rankings for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, and among those recognized are six players currently playing in the EJHL. Four players appeared on the list of 212 eligible North American skaters and two goaltenders were also ranked. Winter Showcase Begins Second Half of Juniors Season

The EJHL Pics lit up the lamp in their first game versus NSA at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro. Six goals in the first period from five different players (Barthlemess (2), Carrabino, Giordano, Triplett and Lembo) set the pace for the game. In the second period, Bouchard, Ziegler and Rivera each got points as netminder Chris O'Shea got the win for the Junior A team.

The Junior B Pics and the Hartford Wolfpack met in a battle of hot goalies. After a full period of scoreless and fiesty play the Wolfpack broke the ice with a goal in the second. Matt Antonacci would answer with a Pics goal at 13:54 in the second. But the Wolfpack returned the favor two minutes later to put the Wolfpack ahead 2-1. The Pics pulled goalie Andrew Furbush for the extra skater late in the second, but the Wolfpack found a way to get past the blueline for an empty net goal with 5 seconds left in the game.


Barthlemess Named EJHL Offensive Player of the Week

Chad Barthlemess
recorded a hat trick in Springfield's only game prior to the Christmas break, a 6-4 win over the Junior Bruins. Two of his goals were scored during the second period, including one on the penalty kill. Chad is a native of Norristown, PA, and is getting considerable college interest.

EMPIRE Names Pics All-Stars
Empire Junior Hockey League (12.14.2010)
The Empire Junior Hockey League has named forward Garrett Torrico and defenseman Zack Prout to this years All-Star Game team. The Empire team will also send Willy Smith, Casey Bucholtz, and Andrew Provost to the Futures Game to be held on January 17th, 2011 in New Hampshire.

Budnick Named EJHL Offensive Player of the Week

In Springfield's two weekend road games, Joe Budnick provided an offensive spark with 7 points in 2 games on 3 goals 4 assists. In Saturday’s hard fought 4-3 win against the Revolution, Joe had a 1-1-2 line. On Sunday, Budnick scored 2 goals and set up 3 others for a 5 point effort in the teams’ 9-2 win to wrap up the weekend sweep. Budnick, the Pics captain, is committed to UCONN for the fall of 2011 a native of Glastonbury, CT.

Stauffer Named ECAC Northeast Rookie of the Week
For Immediate Release: Suffolk University Athletics (11.23.2010)
Freshman Jon Stauffer (Landsdale, Pa.) and Springfield Pics EJHL alumnus was named ECAC Northeast Rookie of the Week on November 22. Stauffer scored three goals and added two assists in the Rams’ 8-4 victory over Salve Regina on Thursday. Suffolk tied the NCAA record scoring eight power play goals in the win. Stauffer became the 27th player in NCAA Division-III Men’s Hockey history to tally the hat trick with the one man advantage, and was the first player in the New England region to do so since the 2000-01 season. Thus far in the season, the freshman defenseman leads all Suffolk skaters in points with six and is tied for the team lead in goals with three through six games.

Courtney Lockwood
, an EJHL All-Star last season, made 83 saves and allowed only one goal in the Pics’ three games last weekend. He made 31 saves in the contest against the Junior Bruins. He let in a goal 5:19 into the game, but that would be the last time all week a puck would get by him. He followed that up with a 25-save shutout of the Rochester Stars on Saturday. He continued his strong play on Sunday with his second shutout, a 27-save performance. Courtney is a 1990-born native of Breckenridge, CO, and is receiving considerable NCAA interest.

Gjurich EJHL Rookie of the Week
Springfield, MA (11.4.2010)
Tyler Gjurich acted as a spark plug for Springfield in their three games last weekend. He started off the week with an assist in the Pics’ win over the Junior Bruins. Saturday saw him pick up a power play goal and an assist against Rochester, followed by another assist on Sunday. Tyler is a 1992-born forward from Hatfield, PA, and currently has 16 points for the Pics.



McMullan to SLU

The Springfield Pics are proud to announce that defenseman and assistant captain Ross McMullan has committed to St. Lawrence University for the fall of 2012. McMullan a 1991 birth year and native of Las Vegas, NV is in his second season with the Pics.“College hockey is a privilege and I am grateful for the opportunity to play under such experienced and motivated coaches and to be part of such a great university. After visiting St. Lawrence and seeing firsthand how the student-athletes excel academically, I know that I will be pushed to grow not just as a hockey player, but as an individual.
