Springfield Pics Squirt Major's Crowned 2010 Ocean State Classic Champions in the AAA Division

What a weekend for the the squirt majors! In a long 3 day tourney the boys from Springfield came home with the 1st place trophies. Though the way the weekend started no one thought it would be possible. The boys started Saturday morning with a loss to New Cannan, CT 5-2 then followed up that night with a tough fought back and forth game with the Wonderland Wizards that ended in a 3-3 tie. The next morning the Pics took the ice against Darien Ct and were on the short side of the score with a tough 8-3 loss. Chris Anderson the Pics only goalie battled a major migraine headache half way into the 1st period and battled the best he could for the entire game! Without Chris it would have been much worse he battled tough!

After these 3 games the parents and the Coaching staff were all shaking there heads knowing the boys had not played 3 of there better games and knew something needed to be done to shake up the mojo going into the quarterfinal game for Edgewood Hawks Sunday afternoon. So Coach Sullivan and Coach Petrick called all the boys to Coach Sullivan’s room and told them to bring there bathing suites and a towel. They walked into the bathroom and saw the tub full of water and saturated with Ice cubes! Each boy had to jump in the cold ice bath! Well Guess what this kick started there hearts! They came out Sunday night flying to a convincing 8 to 3 win, advancing them to Mondays Semi Final game vs. #1 seeded New Cannan, CT.

Monday morning the boys started right were they left off Saturday night with a convincing win and revenging a loss with a 7-4 victory ! Sal Kacoyannakis lead the Pics with 5 goals.

The boys had just enough time in between games to jump into there new ritual the Ice Bath!! Would it work again? Facing Darien, CT which beat the Pics 8-3 on Saturday. Darien scored early in the first period, the boys were cool and tallied right back, then a few minutes later banged another one and then another one. A scoreless 2nd period and each team traded goals in the 3rd. When the buzzer sounded the 99 Squirt Majors were Champions of the 2010 Ocean State Classic!

Also, hats off to the Coaching staff. As poorly as the boys played in there first 3 games these coaches never got down on the boys, never lost there cool, and always kept a positive attitude with each and everyone of these young men. Knowing that they could turn it around and play like Champions which they did. Great Job Coach Sullivan, Coach Petrick, Coach Pagano and Coach Coates.
