98’s Continue to Improve Due to
Strong Commitment to On and Off
Ice Training Program
The 98 PICS are off to a strong start this season with a 12-3 record due in large part to an intense on and off ice training program. The team has shown steady improvement in all facets of the game as they head into Thanksgiving.
Much of the early focus has been on improving quickness through a comprehensive approach that combines a very regimented off-ice program developed by Dave Niezelski, father of defenseman Lucas. Coach John Ashe likes what he sees, “Dave has been a huge part of the team’s development this year. His program is consistent, well organized and focused on developing core strength and it’s measured on a regular basis. He truly is passionate about it. It has been a major highlight for us all. To see where they are today from where they were in September is exciting. Every player has shown improvement in speed and strength as a result of the program.”
The on-ice focus has been strong as well. Coach Ashe added, “We started the season off with the South Shore Kings Tournament and it was an eye opener. We could all see that there is another level of speed in some programs and for us to compete against these teams we need to focus on quickness as a group. We developed four drills that put the focus on speed, balance and acceleration with and without the puck. The four drills are run at the start of every practice. We’ve seen measureable results in all the kids.”
In addition, the team continues to works on its mental preparation as it heads into the heart of the season. Ashe commented, “The one thing the coaches try to develop with the kids is a positive attitude that has them believing in themselves and the others as a team. I’ve been impressed with the desire, passion and commitment this group has shown in their development. It’s made our lives a lot easier to have this group so focused on what your message is day in and day out. There is nothing more rewarding in youth sports for a coach, in my opinion, than to see a group of kids rally around each other, commit to the program and put their focus on the right things! We all know that the lessons they take from this game will stay with them a lifetime.”
It’s still early in the season so there are many exciting moments that lie ahead for this group of fired up hockey players. “We have to keep in mind that the kids are ten and they will have their good days and not so good. We try not to get too critical as we go through the peaks and valleys together. Sometimes easier said than done though! This is a great group of kids. We are having fun together.” Ashe said.
Good luck for the rest of the season 98’s and keep reaching for your goals!
